Fitpass aimed to simplify access to fitness across India by offering a single subscription that unlocked thousands of gyms, studios, and wellness experiences. As the platform scaled to millions of users and corporate clients, the need for a modern, scalable backend became critical. The engagement focused on strengthening core architecture, improving subscription flexibility, and building high-engagement features such as challenges, bookings, and corporate wellness workflows. By evolving the platform into an API-driven system, Fitpass gained the ability to scale nationally, integrate partners seamlessly, and ship features faster - benefiting users, enterprises, and fitness partners alike.

Challenges

Legacy backend systems slowed feature development and limited scalability. Subscription logic needed to handle real-world scenarios like pauses, upgrades, and dynamic pricing. Booking workflows had to support varied gym rules, closures, and availability across thousands of partner locations. Corporate wellness journeys required real-time synchronization between legacy and modern systems. Integrating multiple third-party services for communications, payments, and health offerings added further complexity, all while maintaining performance at scale.

Process

The project began with journey mapping across consumer and corporate experiences. Backend modernization focused on migrating legacy systems to Golang, introducing clean API contracts, and rebuilding subscription engines for flexibility. Booking systems were designed to handle location-specific rules and real-time availability. The team delivered engagement features such as in-app challenges, migrated corporate workflows with real-time callbacks, and introduced dynamic APIs to enable rapid iteration. Observability, security, and performance optimization were embedded throughout the development lifecycle.
