Dell needed a reliable and scalable transportation management system to streamline employee commute, reduce missed connections, and improve fleet utilization across major campuses. RemoteState built a mobile-first CNX Shuttle app with features tailored for both travelers and admin staff. Employees could check real-time shuttle location, reserve seats, get timely notifications, and track their rides from start to finish. Admin teams managed routes, schedules, and occupancy using a secure dashboard. The system enhanced safety, reduced wait times, and improved satisfaction by making company transportation transparent and user-friendly.

Challenges

Building a real-time GPS framework to monitor dozens of simultaneous shuttle routes while ensuring privacy and data security was a core challenge. Integrating accurate location updates, seat reservation workflows, and notification services on both Android and iOS platforms required robust backend design. The admin portal had to support multi-route configuration, reporting, and real-time exception handling - necessitating rigorous QA and load testing at scale.

Process

Initial workshops mapped employee journeys, critical route choke points, and feature needs for admin and travelers. The team delivered phased builds: backend microservices for GPS and booking, push notifications, and mobile UI for usability. Frequent user testing and feedback led to interface improvements and new options like waitlist management and multi-location support. Deployment included detailed admin/employee training and fallback/manual modes for operational resilience.

Key Features:

  • Live shuttle GPS tracking for employees
  • Mobile seat reservation and cancellation
  • Push notifications for trip updates and emergencies
  • Admin dashboard for route, schedule, and occupancy management
